    BDOS After Factory Image Restore
    « on: September 13, 2016, 05:03:21 AM »
I suspected that I had/have a virus on my laptop and after struggling to get rid of it, I decided to do a factory reset. Through Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup I ran Factory Image Restore. After that completed I get a message to either Startup Repair or Run Windows Normally,  which is the same message screen I've been getting since I began having (virus) trouble with my laptop. I tried running windows normally, but the Windows loading screen will come up then give me this blue screen error message:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.  If this screen appears again follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK / F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
    Technical Information:
     *** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xFFFFF880009A97E8, 0xFFFFFFFFC0000034, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)
I should also mention that this virus has made me unable to access Windows, I've been using Ubuntu to back up my files to a USB.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

First of all, viruses or malware normally does not stop your computer from booting. Blue screens are usually caused by a driver or hardware problem. Did you run Chkdsk?

    Download BlueScreenView to your desktop.
    BlueScreenView
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply.

I did not run CHKDSK; should I do that 1st? How do I do that?
I cannot run Windows on my laptop, so I can't get to the desktop to use BlueScreenView. However, I can use Ubuntu; should I use that to run the BlueScreenView program?

Ok, you can run a check on your hard drive as well as your memory.

      Run hard drive diagnostics: tacktech.com
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: imgburn to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here:

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
      *********************************************
That could be a problem with bad RAM. Please run this check just to eliminate that possibility.
      Test your RAM here.

So, I'm not sure which tool you want me to download, since there's many on this page. Are you asking me to download the "Drive Fitness Test" for example? How can I tell the brand of my hard drive?

To test your harddrive you need to download the one for your brand of HD.
