Network drivers
« on: October 03, 2016, 01:28:35 PM »
I'm stuck. I changed the defective drive on my Acer Aspire laptop but there are errors in the Device Manager for the networks. I managed to boot with Linux and downloaded the drivers from Acer but when I try to run Driver Detective in Windows 7 I get an error that it can't download the installer. I tried downloading the drivers and loaded them on the laptop with a disk but that also didn't work. Any ideas how I can get these drivers installed?

1) Not sure what you mean by network drivers. Do you mean the driver for an ethernet card?

2) If you created and restored an image to the new drive you shouldn't need any drivers. Or did you do a clean install of Windows? If so, you should install the chipset driver first and then all other drivers. In Device Manager, which items have yellow or red symbols?

3) Please do not use Driver Detective or any 3rd party driver utilities. ALL laptop drivers should be obtained from the website of the laptop manufacturer - in this case Acer. You should go to their website yourself and download the appropriate drivers and install them without the use of a third party app. It sounds as though you may have tried this, so exactly what goes wrong when you try to install from the disc or usb drive? Have you copied them from the disc to the HD and then installing?

If I'm missing something Dave, please let me know. There isn't anyone on this forum who doesn't want to be of help to you!!!!

A clean install.

Ethernet controller
Network controller
PCI controller
SM bus controller

I went to the Acer site and this is what download when I went for the drivers.

I dl'd the only two sets of drivers that were available, transferred them to the desktop but I still can't update the drivers. I right-click on each device and select update drivers and click to search on my desktop. It can't find any drivers to install.

Dave - the exceptions you noted in Device Manager indicate you need to install the chipset driver. This is an absolute must. In older systems it should be installed ahead of other drivers, in newer systems it shouldn't matter much - but either way you must install it. It should certainly be listed on the ACER driver download page for your system. If you still have an issue, provide us with the model number as BC asks and we'll try to help you locate the appropriate drivers.

Chipset drivers 1st...then a re-boot is neccessary...then re-install all others.
Reason being is many drivers are dependent on chipset drivers being proper and in place...

You mean Windows isn't installed? If that's the case YES - Windows first needs to be installed and then all drivers installed AFTER that (starting with the chipset driver).

Yes, Windows 7 is already installed. I was wondering if re-installing would cure the problem? There was Windows 8 on this computer before the hard drive failed and I installed Windows 7. Would that have made any difference?

No, if it was a clean install it wouldn't matter. But you need to make sure the Acer drivers are W7 compatible. Assuming they are it should be a straightforward process. You can download the correct chipset drivers from the Acer site to any computer, transfer them to your computer (usb drive, cd, whatever). Then they should self install when you double-click them.

Do they seem to install properly (you would see a full install routine run on the screen)?

The Chipset drivers installed with no problem but the only network drivers I can find on Acer are Atheros and Broadcom for Windows 8 and 8.1. There are no drivers for Win 7.  I downloaded them to the laptop and put them on the desktop and also in a folder on the C drive. When I try to upgrade the device drivers and browse the desktop it doesn't see the drivers and also when I browse the folder I created.

Dave - I'm a little confused. You said there was no change in what Device Manager shows as "exceptions" (in post # 7 & 12 above). If it still shows that Ethernet controller
Network controller, PCI controller, SM bus controller in yellow or red, the chipset driver did not install. First things first - are any of those items now normal? It is likely the chipset driver will enable all of the missing functions with the possible exception of the Ethernet controller.

Second, while W7 and W8 are relatively similar, there is no guaranty that W8 drivers will work for W7 (most, but not ALL do). You need to check with Acer to see if their drivers are compatible with Windows 7.

Third, the correct way to install drivers you download is by running the .exe file, not by having Device Manager search for them (unless those are the specific instructions included with the driver).

What is the model of the laptop?

It appeared to be installed properly. I'm thinking there is a problem with the drivers I'm trying to install. When I go to Acer, Drivers and put in the laptop model I see only the drivers for Win 9 and 9.1. Since I installed Windows 7 on this computer I will probably need the drivers for Win 7. I'm going to try finding the drivers for an older model with Windows 7 and see what happens.

So you tried downloading and installing the chipset driver, pci driver, lan driver, etc listed in that link and they did not install? I'm not sure what to say Dave. If the drivers are not installing they are either the wrong drivers, it's a funky Windows install, or there is something wrong with the way they are being installed. Have you tried Acer Customer Support (1 (866) 695-2237)? The Network controller, PCI controller, SM bus controller should all be part of the chipset drivers.

It appears to be installing but at one point I get the message that the PCI drivers did not install. All the different drivers are supposed to be included in the zipped file. I downloaded another set of drivers for a different model of laptop and it cured the SM bus controller but the others remain the same. Perhaps, I'll give them a call.

Just an update. I download and installed the drivers provided in that link and was able to get on the internet wirelessly but the Ethernet controller was not working. I fixed that but now I can't get the Network controller to work. I have to hard-wire the laptop to get on-line.
