BartPE is not there.
« on: January 21, 2017, 09:10:35 PM »
A link to the web site says:
BartPE is no longer available!
http://nu2.nu/pebuilder/
No details ae given.

Bert's PE was used as an method  to boot windows tools when trying to fix a dead Windows system.  Great for a rescue CD.

I imagine it's because BartPE didn't support anything after XP/Server 2003 so continuing to support/maintain it would be a waste of time.  The issue I see with tools like these is the questionable/unclear nature of using/distributing disks created with these in terms of the Microsoft EULA.  I've therefore always been uncomfortable using Windows based "rescue CDs", especially in a commercial environment.  From what I've found, there's been no time I can remember where a Linux/UNIX/DOS based recovery live CD has been insufficient, and those tend to not have the licencing issues that Windows based ones do.

Camerongray, I think you said it right.
This is no shortage of rescue  CDs in Linux.
And now you can buy Linux CDs from Amazon!

Some individuals do not have tools and skills needed to create the CD.
Also, if you time is valuable it makes sense to buy instead of fry.

We're talking about using a Boot Disk for diagnostic purposes. If burning a CD is too much for somebody's skillset then it's unlikely to be much use overall.

Can't you create a PE rescue disk from Windows these days (i.e. since Vista at least?)

Stick a blank CD in the drive and click "Create disk"? Come on! if they can't do that, what do you imagine they are going to do with a disk they bought? They probably won't even be able to boot from it, let alone perform any useful tasks.
