Want to change my TLD from .COM to .CLUB soon.
« on: February 04, 2017, 02:35:01 PM »
The .COM is the most popular TLD for web site names. But after giving it some thought, almost ten minutes, I want to make it now .CLUB instead.
The are two forceful reasons.
1. Club is a word and represents a social group off people.
2. It costs less.

So,  very soon my geek9pm site will not have the dot COM.
It will have the dot CLUB at the end.

(TLD = Top Level Domain)

How much price difference between .com and .club? And are you doing this through godaddy or some other place?

What you should really do is get the .club domain long before the .com expires then set it up so the .com will redirect to the .club domain.  This means that search engines.etc will properly understand that the domain has changed and will update their listings accordingly.

I now have the CLUB working and it is on the same server as the COM
In fact, it is the same start page.
 Both are with Godaddy.
The renewal of the COM would be about $15 us. The CLUB goes for $1.
My domain  is not a money maker of any kind, so there is not way it can pay for itself.
I was ready to just give it up, and then saw that the CLUB goes for $1 and thought to myself for a $1 I will do it.

What is the best way to redirect a domain?

You would usually set-up forwarding within the admin panel for wherever you registered the domain.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

Update.
I now have my domain name changed. But there is a problem. The server is showing a subdomain,k not a top level domain. This might be due to delay in the DNS propagation. Sometimes it takes p to three days to resolve.

I should have used an alias rather than build a new directory for my word press blog. In hindsight an alias would have been a  painless transition. I should have known better.
Instead, I made a backup of the content of my blog and then created a new instance of Word Press in a new directory and imported the saved content. Something went wrong, so I tried another directory. I had in the end three copies of my blog. Fortunately, my host does no change me for using a bit more storage space.

Meanwhile, I am goring to edit the ink here so it jumps to the new place on the server.  I should not have waited until the last minute.

Out of interest, were most of the new TLDs you looked at this cheap?

Now about the price of TLD.
Often the registrar may offer a deal of a very low price the first year and the price goes way up the next year.
Some web builders can make money rom new doin sites by using cleaver tricks to get people to spend money on a novel flashy web site. For those kind of commercial operators the cost of the TLD is of little concern. So they can afford to pay almost any price.
Now for myself, and many individuals like me who have a domain as a hobby, the cost of renewal of the domain becomes important.

To date the cost of the CLUB is about one dollar per year. But the COM is now at about $15 per year. Some registrars change even more.
Fro me, the choice was either give  up or reduce the cost of my hobby.Kemp in mind a number of people live on  on  a fixed income and do not have a pension.
