Computer says can't start because Msvcp140.dll is missing
    « on: February 10, 2017, 02:18:11 PM »
I have a Dell laptop that my husband uses and it started going funky on him last night.  He knows less about computers than I do, but I did get a message when I tried to run Malware saying Msvcp140.dll is missing, please install.  I don't know how to do that so I googled it and found a few websites that you can click on and download the fix.  Do I trust these websites?  I'm running Windows 7, the computer is an Dell Inspirion i-5. 3210 CPU. 2/.50 Ghz, mem:  8.00 GB, 64-bit operating system.  I did see a video on YouTube on how to do it, but I didn't understand about copying info from folder to folder.  If I can just click on a fix, that seems simple enough to me.  I'm just not sure about trusting them.  Thanks in advance!

    Here is what Microsoft said.
    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/msvcp140ddll-is-missing-from-your-computer/c253126e-8f11-45d0-828d-8ede40c3126a?auth=1
If you clink the link you can see, they said nothing. Over a year ago.

Before yu 'fix' it, you may wan to think about why it failed.
Here is a link that has more information than what MS had to say:
    https://fix4dll.com/msvcp140_dll

From this one might think this is caused by a a third-party program that does not work well. The DLL file is from package needed for some program developed my somebody other than Microsoft. The best fix may be to give up using such a program.
On course, there could be other factors. You PC might have hardware problem. But I doubt it. Hardware never picks on  a specific software  program.

You can try and boot the PC in safe mode and see if you can roll back the system a few days before the event first started.

I hope that can be of some help.  :)

Stay away from any sites that offer a download fix....
He can run sfc /scannow 1st to see if that solves it...

This computer is hardly used anymore since he got a "smart phone" a couple of years ago, so I have no idea of when this started as I never use this computer.  I tried to update all 66 updates he has on the computer, but it won't even do that.  I have Malwarebyte on it and I ran that, a few things came up that "might" be threats, I didn't know what they were, so I got rid of them.  And I also have forgotten how to start the computer is safe mode.  It's been so long since I did that, I have forgotten.  I'm getting ready to run the sfc/scannow program.  We'll see what happens.  Thank you!

Okay, I went to the scanner and it's telling me I have 2 programs with stability issues and registry has 433 issues.  Now they want me to pay them $27.95 to fix it.  Do I do it?

        Don't do it.
Do you have the original DVD used to install or repair the system? If so you an just do a repair installation and that should fix the problems.

No, I do not have a DVD.  We bought this in 2013 at Staples and there was no disk with it.

MSVCP140.DLL is part of the Visual Studio 2015 Redistributable. Whatever happened to the file, whether it wasn't installed by the "malware" program you are trying to run (I hope you mean ANTI malware!), or was perhaps corrupted in some way, that should reinstall it.

I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

if this computer had been bought more than two years ago it would not have come with Windows 10. No reason to think that the computer came with Windows 7? Unless you say, I'm going to assume the computer came with Windows 7 on it.
Here are the methods you would use to try to boot the computer up in the Windows 7 safe mode.

Start Windows 7/Vista/XP in Safe Mode with Networking
Immediately after the computer is powered on or restarted (usually after you hear your computer beep), tap the F8 key in 1 second intervals.
After your computer displays hardware information and runs a memory test, the Advanced Boot Options menu will appear.

            More info...
            https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-start-windows-7-in-safe-mode-2624540
When you do that,  it will show you what version of windows  yu have and  will give you options to repair or recovery the system.
            Does that  work?

I have the computer open in Safe Mode.  I put the DVD in, nothing happens.  So I start looking and typing in my problem and the computer has checked a few things, everything comes out all right.  Some things says it needs a fix, but nowhere does it tell me how to fix it.  I am really getting frustrated.  Why doesn't the DVD pop on, or is it supposed to?  I want to get this thing fixed and out of my way.  I know I'm extremely computer stupid, but whenever you guys have run me through it step-by-step, I can usually fix it.  This computer is not  "fixing" it because of the missing .dll thing.  Why doesn't it let me install it from the disk?  Or, better yet, how do I install it from the disk?  I can go back to a restore point, but this computer hardly gets used and I wouldn't have the slightest idea when this problem started.
