No boot up
« on: February 24, 2006, 07:20:55 AM »
Not sure if this is in the right place but....

Ok so i'm running Windows 98SE on my 2nd machine, but whenever it is booting up, it will either just freeze on one of the 'Windows 98' images while it is starting, or when i start in safe mode it will just freeze up on a black screen.

Recently it has been messing up, so i tried to reinstall, but whenever i do it will do one of the above, after installing the system files and configuring the hardware.

It has 32MB RAM, has an ATi Graphics Card and a YAMAHA sound card.

Any suggestions to help with this?

I've tried using a boot disk but it has had no help.

Thanks to all who help   :D

What computer or motherboard make/model?

How about testing the RAM after removing and reseating it?

www.memtest86.com

How about some free diagnostics from the HD manufacturer's site?

Has any of the hardware been tampered with or changed since it was working correctly? Have you monkeyed with the BIOS? Are you the only person using this machine?

I'm the only one who uses it, i don't think the hardware's been tampered with, everything inside looks fine. No idea what the BIOS is or what it looks like. Sorry  :-[

Thanks for the help so far!

Let us know what you learn.  ;)

Everest can tell you all about your system, but it has to be running first.

Continually tap the F8 key at boot and a boot menu will appear.
Choose Option 4 - Step By Step Confirmation.
You will be asked if you want to load each driver etc. Do so and take note of each until the system fails. Post that driver or application here.

Thanks guys, Backdated i'll try that now.
I'm gonna take it apart first and check that everythings in the right place.  ;D

UPDATE: Everything seems right, except on the three memory slots two sets of the things which keep the memory in place were open. Not sure if that affects anything though.

Scandisk has found everything to be ok, just waiting for it to boot now.

Update 2: Well safe mode booted fine, although the drivers for my graphics card have gone AWOL. I have some backups on a flash drive, so i'm restarting now and i'm gonna try it.
Well the normal mode doesnt work, it just freezes on the second 'Windows 98' image, so i'm reinstalling it with a copy on my C drive.

Only a bare set of drivers are loaded in Safe Mode, including your VGA drvers. This is why your graphics drivers were "AWOL".
Did you try the step by step mode as suggested?
