Display Won't Fit Monitor
« on: September 03, 2006, 02:00:31 PM »
Okay, I changed the resolution on my computer to 800x600 for a little while so I could check that my webpage looked okay on lower resolutions and when I tried to change it back to 1280x768 the entire screen was too small and there were large black gaps above and below it.

The width is fine but the height is far too little, this window is currently sitting in the middle of the screen with about 200pixels of black above and below it.

It basically looks like all I need to do is adjust the vertical size but my monitor only has horizontal adjustment of size. When I change to anything below 1280x768 the whole screen is filled but I would really preffer to use the current resolution.

The monitor is a
Proview MA-782KC
model - 700P

any suggestions on how I could get the picture to fit the screen?

Also, auto adjusting it doesn't work.

ok, I have made up an extremely crude but acurate picture on MS Paint of what my monitor is currently displaying. Hopefully this illustrates my point a bit better.  ;D

Your picture looks like a flatscreen LCD monitor. If that is the case it should come with an auto adjust button. Also try changing the "phase" and "clock" settings on the monitor. Make a note of their original values in case you need to return.

On the display options click advanced, and look in the monitor or adapter tabs for refresh rate... what is the current setting? Try changing it to 60hz.. look in the monitor's manual for other supported refresh rates and try those for size.

Yes, it is an LCD monitor.

I went to the site suggested by street1 but I dont really have a clue what I'm looking for, as you may have noticed by now I dont really have a clue about computers either.

I have tried the auto adjust button which makes no difference, I changed the "phase" setting but nothing seems to happen, what does it actually do? What do you mean by "clock"? I dont have anything with clock on the OSD menu.

The refresh rate is already set at 60Hz and that is the only option in the drop down menu so I'm not sure how I would change it.

You are saying a resolution of 1240x768 originally worked fine on your monitor?

LCD monitors have a "native" resolution... if you try to display a resolution below this, they will either stretch the screen to fit the monitor or leave black gaps, as it seems in this case. First of all please tell us the maximum resolution the LCD monitor can display, as this is the native resolution. If it is higher than 1240x768 then this means somehow the monitor has switched from stretching mode to "letterbox" mode (at least then we know where to focus our effors). If it is higher, try selecting 1240x1024 (or the maximum) and I have a feeling the whole screen will be filled. You said the gaps are about 200 pixels... well the vertical difference between those two resolutions is close, at 256 pixels... therefore that resolution should fill in the gaps for you. If you like that resolution, then problem solved. If you really want 1240x768 then we'll have to investigate some more on switching your monitor over to stretch mode, but that resolution is really intended for widescreen monitors. Unless your monitor IS widescreen, in which case this is a more serious problem.

      So two things:
      1. Did the target resolution use to work fine on the monitor?
      2. What is your maximum resolution?
      3. Try it and see if the screen is filled.

I tried switching to 1240x1024 and the whole screen was filled.  :o

I thought I had tried all the higher resolutions before I posted this thread but I obviously missed this one by accident, 1240x1024 seems to be the only resolution that works, anything above it and some of the screen is missing and anything below it the letterbox thing happens.

Thanks a lot for your help Neil, and I apologize to all who posted for my stupidity.  ::)

I think you probably do not need to reinstall your video driver.  It worked before you changed the resolution; it should work when you change it back.

I think Neil hit the target here.  And, I suspect you really were using some resolution other than
1240x768 before you changed it to 800x600 and you got confused when you attempted to change it back.  Think of the resolution numbers as length and width dimensions of a rectangle.  Obviously, a 1240x768 rectangle has a different ratio of width to height, or vice versa, than a 1240x1024 rectangle.  Understand?

Edit: Well, I see the problem has been resolved.

No reason to apologise...and it's not stupidity just unfamiliarity.
      You'll be fine.
p.s. try 1024X768 just to see if it works...

I changed back to 1024x768 and it changed to the letterbox thing again. I bet 1240x1024 was what I was using before and I just had 1024x768 in my head for no reason.

So basically exactly what soybean said  ::)

I'll try to investigate my problems to a greater extent before I start getting worried in future, thanks again guys.  ;D
