Computer wont turn on!
« on: July 31, 2007, 12:31:18 PM »
I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this but I'm new t the site so take it easy on me.
Anyways I woke up today and tried turn on my computer, it starts to turn on and after about 2 seconds it shuts down(just loses power or something). My comp is running on Windows XP, I'm not too sure about the make (i think it was a custom job), and this is my mother's comp so I don't know too much about this. Apparently this has happened before and to get it to work again they just kept hitting the power button and it started up after about 15 mins. of this. I tried to repeat this but for fear of damaging the computer I decided to not keep trying that. What I have tried was removing and turning off all power to the comp but that honestly didn't do anything.

Please help! I don't know what to do!

Thanks! ^_^

Welcome to puterhope narutoman! Yeah, I would suggest not pressing the power button repeatedly. Do you have access to another power supply that you can try in the computer? Also could you give a list of your computer specs? (go to "start" "run" then type in "dxdiag" and it will give you a list of them) But if you have access to another working power supply, try to replace it and see if this works.
If you hear beans rattling....... that means I'm thinking.

lol my bad, I think my brain went on vacation there with my last post. With the new PSU does anything happen? It could be that your motherboard is bad.

Also when you put the PSU in and plugged it up did the lights come on on the motherboard?

if you have changed the psu and it still does not turn on, then this probably indicates that your cpu is Fubar, gone, kaput
sorry matey, it will have to be a trip to your local dealer

Are you saying you already tried swapping in another PSU ? ?
Was it the same wattage or greater ? ?
Did it come from a known working machine ? ?

Jumping to the conclusion that the CPU is fried is a little bit drastic at this point.

It could also be a cooling fan, RAM, heat or about 50 different things.
Check the operation of all onboard fans first.
Then run memtest to see if the RAM is still good.

          Let us know.
