    Page time out in browser
    « on: October 15, 2008, 04:23:53 PM »
    Hi all,

Recently I have been having a problem with loading web pages. I know my connection is strong because I can access my FTP and connect to other computers through VNC outside of my network very very quickly. But random pages will not load within Firefox or IE. Google for example will load one time then 5 seconds later I get a page timeout. I do not use a firewall except for windows firewall and I have disabled that temporarily to try and fix the problem but to no avail. I have recently installed peer guardian but leave http enabled.
I have also enabled a static IP for my FTP.

Any help will be much appreciated as I have actually resorted to connecting to my mother’s computer remotely just to view pages! Ridiculous!

    Thanks in advance.

Close Firefox. Go Start>All Programs>Mozilla Firefox, click on Mozilla Firefox (safe mode). Same thing?

    Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?

What type of connection ? ?
Peer Guardian may in fact be the issue as well as the static IP address you enabled...

I have a cable connection routed (hard wired) through a wrt54g with the original firmware..... should i update the firmware?
I do have a wireless network but not the same problems on my Notebook.

What about peer guardian would be the problem?

Could there be a work around with the Static IP? I use my FTP at work quite often and need it to be reliable.

Let's go through some basic steps...

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
        Power them back on.
        Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

        If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
        cmd
        Click OK.

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
        ipconfig /flushdns
        ipconfig /registerdns
        ipconfig /release
        ipconfig /renew

        Restart computer.

        If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
        cmd
        Click OK.

        At Command Prompt, type in:
        netsh int ip reset reset.log
        Hit Enter.
        Type in:
        netsh winsock reset catalog
        Hit Enter.

        Restart computer.

        If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
        Restart computer, and check again.

Well, since you're not a topic starter, we even don't know, what your problem is/was.

He had one good bump though:

Don't mind me saying but IE is a problem in itself.

          :P

            just to let everyone know...

            I figured out the problem.

i tried Broni's Suggestions and still nothing worked, so i disabled peer guardian and killed my Bulletproof FTP, but to no avail. then i opened up process explorer and noticed that my FTP server had an update service running. I killed it and everything works fine now.

Does any one have any suggestions on a work around for this so that i may keep my FTP running?

Thanks so much for all the help.

I think I might be having the same problem as you. I already tried the ipconfig stuff. How do I fix the FTP update service running?

              Thanks.
