I now have the computer repaired. I slaved the old HD to one of my computers and I started downloading the data I wanted to recover to a memory stick. I filled the stick and when I went back to get the rest of the data I couldn't access the drive. I can see the drive in Device Manager and in Disk Management but I can't see it in My Computer or in Windows Explorer. Is there something I'm not doing correctly?

You may need to take ownership of it again since you maxxed out the thumd drive...this will sometimes kick in the file protection of Windows.
