    Alternative Clean Windows XP Install
    « on: May 20, 2009, 08:13:12 AM »
my computer is having a bunch of problems including randomly crashing and jazz like that.  i backed up all my files and attempted to run the windows xp cd to just do a clean install of windows and start over.. in the process i find out my cd drive is bad now.. so i borrowed a external cd drive from my office.. the external drive trys to boot up to the cd then gives me error message:

    "I/O error reading device EXTCD001

    Abort, Retry, Fail?

is there a fix for this? or is there a alternative way to doing a clean install of windows?
*note* the recovery partition has been deleted from my harddrive.

there are minor scratches on the disk itself, nothing that looks like could be too damaging, but knowing my luck it is probably just bad enough to damage the information that i need, haha

is there any other ways to do a clean install without the cd?

As long as Microsoft license terms are not broken.

Try Dell first. There is a better chance that Dell will send recovery disks for your system than Microsoft sending one
Don't forget to give thanks if I was able to help ya! Please?

i would call dell before microsoft anyday of the week.. i promise.. i honestly do not like messing with microsoft in general.. especially when it comes to windows os.. they're support is too hard to deal with half the time..  i would go completely linux if i could, but there is too much i HAVE to use windows for..

I agree with Mr_Mister I fix computers on the side and have called Dell several times to get a replacement XP Pro CD. They usually have no problems with it when i call. I have even had them replace a CD for a system that was out of warranty.
