The device in the system modular bay cannot be identified
    « on: May 22, 2009, 07:48:39 AM »
I'm using Dell Inspiron laptop with window vista home premium. My problem is after the dell loading page there's an information page from dell notified that 'The device of the system modular bay cannot be identified. It may not be completely inserted or may have some other problem. The step given to solve the problem is enter the device into the modular bay properly to the bay. then switch off the power and on to let the computer re-identified the modular. or else press Esc to ignore it. But after i reset my computer the error page still appear. I did enter the dvd-room into the bay properly. If i ignore the error then my dvd-rom would be malfunction. the room cannot be eject out even.
This problem occur a few time bfore, but it sometimes okay automatically.

What should i do?? Is my dvd-room spoilt??

Sounds like the DVD drive is shot.
How old is it ? ?
Unfortunately to test this is difficult because you need the same model # to swap in to a laptop for testing.
Are there any Dell service centers in your area ? ?

I think the dvd drive still okay. Bcuz in the dell loading page the room still can be eject out and i place in cd it sounds it still can spin.

The dell service center is not really convenient for my area. I wish to save the payment even.  :-X

It still can eject in the dell loading page after i switch on power (bfore the error page come out). If i ignore the error the dvd drive won't work(cannot eject out even) and the LED will lighted even though it is not running.

Opening and closing does not mean the drive is working...

If the dvd drive is opening and closing all that means is it is getting power that is all, the drive was failing that is exactly how they act like before they do, I would suggest you contact dell if you're still under warranty.

For now my DVD drive has out of function... but it does like tat bfore. And recover automatically for twice. (I not really sure wat i done to it)

I got another question. I hav juz bought my laptop for 1 and half year. I nvr use it wif the cooler pad underneath it. (My room is not under air-conditioning) Now my battery has spoilt and DVD drive either....

Izit necessary to use a cooler pad to elongate the laptop life???
