c0000139 ntdll.dll blue screen from recovery console (XP)
    « on: July 25, 2009, 01:46:38 PM »
    Hey all,

I have recently been having an endless reboot loop on a very old laptop of which I know little about the specs.
(It is running XP Professional SP2, Sony Vaio, pentium III). I downloaded the recovery console tool and burned it to a CD, can get to the command line and then try to run chkdsk /r. However, I receive the following blue screen message after trying this:

    STOP: c0000139 {Entry Point Not Found}
The procedure entry point LdrSetMUICacheType could not be located in the dynamic link library ntdll.dll.

I have no problem with reformatting the laptop completely as there is nothing of much use on it, however, no XP CD came with the system and so I have been trying to solve this error through the recovery console. Recently I tried to copy a new version of ntdll.dll from C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\ after renaming the version in C:\Windows\System32\
This I tried after searching around for a solution and saw a similar error with this solution marked as possible. However, the blue screen still persists. Safe Mode refuses to boot also.

Any help would be much appreciated, I hope there is enough information for someone a lot smarter than me to be able to shed some light on this.
    Thanks a lot!

Backup all your important data and do a restore from the hidden recovery partition....

NOTE: All data will be lost and the machine will be back to Day One status....

      Thanks for the reply patio,

There is no data I want to retrieve, so that's not an issue. How do I go about restoring from the hidden partition?
Do all of these types of laptops have these hidden partitions? And can I do this without being able to access the OS or even safe mode?

      Cheers

We need to know at least Vaio model. It may not have recovery partition, if it's very old.

        Cheers Broni,

Sorry, I am fairly useless with computers and completely forgot to mention that it's a Sony Vaio PCG-631M!
It also comes with the XP Product Key on the back, but no XP CD.

Thanks very much for your replies guys  :)

Then there should be a recovery partition.  Did you ever have the option to 'burn' your own disks?

          Thanks Quantos

Awesome. Hopefully it'll be able to get up and running then.
Hm, I'm not sure whether I have any burned discs, it's my father's old laptop and I believe that all the documents that came with it (and presumably any discs he may have burned) have been lost. I don't even know if there was an option to do such a thing.

But if there's a recovery partition, there's hope even without a disc?

          Cheers

Can you boot into safe mode?

Neither safe mode or last known good configuration appear to be able to boot, there is just a very long boot which finally gets to the Windows loading bar and then the computer restarts. the 'Sony' logo comes up and then the whole thing repeats.

What if you remove the battery and try?

I undocked the laptop, removed the battery and left it out for 15 minutes. Then plugged the power cord straight into the laptop (not the dock) and tried safe mode and last known good configuration. Neither worked, it's exactly as with the battery connected :(

I was hoping, but as some people here say - No Joy.

What happens if you try going into safe mode?

Do you get an error or does the option just not show up?

I tap F8 to get into the advanced options menu where I can choose. Selecting safe mode and then XP as the OS, loads of writing comes up:

                  multi(0)disc(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\system32\drivers...

The Windows logo and loading bar comes up and moves along for about half a minute, then the screen flashes blue quickly (never noticed this before, not even a half a second flash, although there does appear to be some white writing) and then goes black. The Sony logo pops up for a few seconds and then it's back to the Windows logo. Then the whole thing repeats again and again.

                  Thanks
