The USB ports on my Toshiba laptop Satellite 5005-S504 Stopped working. At the same time I found in Device Manager a yello question mark listed as Other devices and under that a yello questionmark with an yello exclamation mark titled Base System Device. Clicking properties states, unknown manufacturer, location: PCI bus 2 device 12,function 0. Also, The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28) Click reinstall Driver. When I do so,there is never anything found. Anyone have any ideas about this? Thanks for your attention to my problem.

What happened between the last time the system operated properly and the first time it didn't (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?

Hello Alan. The hard drive (Old orriginal 20 Gig) died so I did a new drive reinstall from the 2001 year Toshiba recovery CD's. After various unknown windows updates, I had to go looking for drivers such as what should be the current driver for the "NVIDEA GeForce2 Go Toshiba" Motherboard Video Adapter, but that's another lesser problem as I have a display on the screen, just don't know if it is the rite one. I do need to get the USB function back more than anything else for now. Thanks for your attention.

Insert the original os disk ( I don't know which os you are using currently)

Open device manager and if the yellow mark is under usb devices then click on the mark and click on reinstall button.
select the option reinstall automatically..... then the usb drivers will automatically installed into your system.....

If you have any other driver problem insert your laptop manufacturer's driver disk and do the same procedure as given above..

Hello Vikram. I am running the XP version that came with this 2001 laptop. I think it may have been the first XP release back then. There is no manufacturers driver disk as such, just the emergency CD's that were made from the original partition for that purpose when it was new. The yellow question mark in device manager is under Other and under that, Base System device.Since my original posting, I have been looking at the "Supposed Driver Scans" out there to gather any further Info and while I don't know if it is accurate or not, this is what I find. ************************************************************
************************************************************
Config Flag 64
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) LOCATION PCI bus 2,
device 12, function 0
PCI\VEN_1179&DEV_0804&SUBSYS_00011179&REV_03\4&3A33FO1C
ClassGuide {4D36E97E-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Possible Device ID
Hardware ID PCI\VEN_1179&DEV_0804&SUBSYS_00011179&REV_03
Compatible ID PCI\VEN_1179&DEV_0804&REV_03
Compatibility's used by the Op system to locate an inf file for a device whose hardware ID cannot be found. They are more generic than hardware ID's. A device can have zero, one, or more compatible ID's. Please let me know if this info helps at all.

I see no USB drivers for your Toshiba model
Satellite 5005-S504

Have you upgraded to WinXP-SP3?

Usually, if the manufacturer of the compuer does not provide the drivers, they refer you to the chipset manufacturer.

Download and install CPU-Z.  Maybe it will be able to provide more information.  Look on the "Mainboard" tab.

You need to contact whomever you got the computer from and obtain the chipset driver.

No, It has not been upgraded to SP3. I will do so next. What Chipset are you speaking of? Are there not many different ones on the motherboard? Iwill try the CPU util and let you know what it finds. The Computer was bought new by me in 2001 at Comp USA in Seattle, WA. Thanks again.

You should have recieved a Driver CD with that laptop...
The Chipset driver will be on that.
Put the CD in and run setup.

If not we will have to track them down at the manuf. site...
