Help I'm connected but can't get to most internet sites
    « on: December 19, 2009, 05:58:53 AM »
    I have a laptop, with vista, it has maleware antibytes installed on it and it uses internet explorer 7. It worked fine until a couple of days ago. Now when I go onto it, it recognises the internet explorer and will let me go on gmail, trygames.com and the log in page for hotmail, but nowhere else. Please help I'm really lost; I've already found and tried the following, with no success;

    Restaring the modem

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    Restart computer.

Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).
    At Command Prompt, type in:
    netsh int ip reset reset.log
    Hit Enter.
    Type in:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    Hit Enter.

    Restart computer.

    And downloading WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml

        1.  Ping.  Let's see if "ping" may be used to contact some websites, both by IPv4 address and Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN).  From a "Command Prompt" window, try the following commands and "post" back success or error message for each:
             a.  ping www.computerhope.com
             b.  ping 69.72.169.241

             c.  ping www.eff.org
             d.  ping 64.147.188.3

             e.  ping www.opendns.com
             f.  ping 208.69.38.160

             g.  ping www.nirsoft.net
             h. ping 69.73.166.124

        2.  HyperText Transmission Protocols.  From a web browser (I prefer Firefox), try to access a website using two different protocols and report results:
             a.  http://www.eff.org
             b.  https://www.eff.org

        3.  Web Browsers.
             a.  Consider trying a different web browser; e.g. "Mozilla Firefox", "Opera".
             b.  Give us two or three examples of FQDNs for websites that don't work; e.g. "www.facebook.com", "www.msn.com", "www.google.com".
             c.  What "message(s)" are reported for the sites it will not let your access?
             d.  Try invoking browser in its "safe mode" (no add-ons).
                  (1)  For Internet Explorer 7, from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956196:
        Quote
click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

        4.  Hosts File.  Use an editor to search the text file "hosts" for any FQDNs that don't work for you; e.g. www.facebook.com.  If you find it in the hosts file, report the IP address associated with it.  File should be located in directory "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\" if your %systemroot% is "C:\Windows".

        maleware anti virus antibytes
No such thing. MalwareBytes is an anti SPYWARE utility, not anti virus. If you do not have an anti virus utility installed you are probably infected. I'd go to the Malware forum on this site and follow the instructions in the announcement at the top of that forum.
