Scratched CD

Whether or not a scratched CD (compact disc) or DVD (digital versatile disc) works depends upon the severity of the scratch. Because standard CDs and DVDs have a protective layer, these discs can usually withstand several scratches with no issues. However, a deep scratch or a lot of scratches can cause the disc to not work correctly.

Problems caused by a scratched CD and DVD

  • The CD or DVD that is scratched will not work.
  • An error occurs indicating the CD cannot be read. A CDR-101 error is an example.
  • DVD movie is distorted in certain sections of the movie. For example, the movie may jump or freeze.
