How to determine what type of printer I have?

Question:

How do I determine what type of printer I have?

Answer:

  1. If you are attempting to identify the printer manufacturer or model, this information is commonly found on the front, back, or bottom of the printer. In some cases, the printer's identification may also be found within the cover of the printer.
  2. If you are attempting to determine the printer's interface, you must familiarize yourself with the different types of printer interfaces.
  3. If you are unable to locate a manufacturer or model number of the printer, but are able to locate a FCC identification number, it is recommended that you perform a FCC search using that number. Additional information about FCC numbers and how to search for information about a FCC number can be found on our FCC dictionary definition page

Reasoning:

Product listing or specifications

If you are trying to list all the specific information about your computer printer, specifying the manufacturer, type, and model of the printer is sufficient. For example:

Parallel Ink Jet Canon BJC 240 printer

Drivers or installation

  • A listing of computer printer drivers can be found on our printer drivers page.
  • Additional information about installing a computer printer can be found on document CH000441.
  • Additional information and help with printer ink installation can be found on document CH000084

Replacement or repair

If you are trying to determine the type of printer because it needs to be repaired, it is recommended you obtain an estimated repair cost on the printer first. If the cost outweighs buying a new printer, it is recommended you simply purchase a new printer.

  • Additional buying tips on buying a computer printer can be found here.
