After installing Windows my default drive is not C:
Question
After installing Windows my default drive is not C:
Cause
Microsoft Windows by default will install to the first hard drive it sees available. If you've had to re-install Windows because of a hard drive failure this issue will occur because other drives (e.g. CD, DVD, USB, or flash card readers) are detected before the hard drive is first setup and capable of being detected by your computer.
Answer
If Windows has been installed onto another drive such as D:, E:, F:, G:, H:, or I: we suggest that you re-install Windows if you're wanting to change the drive letter of where Windows is located. Attempting to hack the registry or change other system settings to fix this issue often causes more issues than it actually fixes. Will Windows install to the C: drive the next time?
Yes. Because the hard disk drive is detected it will be setup as the first available drive when booting from the Windows XP disc. When re-installing Windows we suggest that you follow the steps for re-installing Windows XP.
Can I just run Windows from a different drive letter?
Yes. There will be no issues with running Windows from a different drive letter. However, many programs will often default the installation path to the C: drive. Causing you to have to type in or browse to the drive letter of Windows during each install, which for some can be annoying.
