Andrew File System

Updated: 12/31/2022 by Computer Hope

The Andrew File System, also known as AFS, is a clustered file system. It is used in large-scale, distributed computing applications where hundreds or thousands of networked computers need access to the same pool of files.

AFS volumes are hosted transparently on multiple servers and delivered over a network connection using Kerberos authentication and ACLs to ensure security. On each AFS client, the filesystem is divided into shared and local space, with the local space being unique to the individual client.
