Authentication may refer to any of the following:

1. Authentic is anything or anyone that's what or whom they claim to be and is not a fake or copy. For example, software purchased at the store is an authentic version of the software. If someone made a copy of the install disc, it's not authentic and would be considered software piracy.

2. Authentication, authenticating, and authorize describe the process of identifying a person and making sure they are who they say they are. For example, a password is a basic method of authorizing someone. There are different types of authentication, including biometrics, entering a PIN (personal identification number), 2FA (two-factor authentication), or a picture password.
