Defragmentation

Microsoft Windows DefragDefragmentation is a term used to describe the process of reorganizing a hard drive's data to help increase the proficiency of accessing the data. Hard drives that are severely fragmented will take longer to access the data because it is spread across the drive and not located in a central area.

  • An example of a utility that organizes the disk drive is Microsoft's defrag utility, shown in the picture on this page. Additional information on the Windows program defrag can be found on our defrag page.
  • Another great defrag utility is Diskeeper by Diskeeper.
