Index mark

Alternatively referred to as the index track, the index mark is a mark used to indicate the starting point of a track on a hard disk drive. This mark is commonly a small hole, gap, or magnetic strip. The index mark allows a hard disk drive head to move to exact sections of the hard disk drive.
