ScanPST

In Microsoft Outlook, the mail and folder data is stored in a .pst file. If the file becomes corrupt and a user is unable to open their mail or folders, the Inbox Repair tool can be run (scanpst.exe). This utility diagnoses the problem and attempts to repair the corrupted file, restoring it back to as close to its pre-corrupted state as possible.

Scanpst.exe is installed with Outlook and can be used to repair .pst files for Outlook 97 to Outlook 2007. For business computers, the utility only scans the local .pst file and not any .pst files on the mail server itself. The scanpst.exe file is usually located in C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/OFFICE12 or C:/Program Files/Common Files/System/MSMAPI/1033. (NOTE: In Windows 64-bit versions, the Program Files folder is titled "Program Files (x86)", since Microsoft Office is a 32-bit application and the "x86" Program Files folder is for 32-bit applications.)
