SMBus

Updated: 12/31/2022 by Computer Hope

Short for System Management Bus, the SMBus or sm bus controller was created by Intel in 1995 as a split from I2C. SMBus requires more strict electrical and protocol conventions and enables your computer motherboard to communicate with low-speed peripherals such as the battery on a laptop computer.

If SMBus shows an error in the Device Manager, this may indicate your motherboard chipset drivers have not been installed correctly during the Windows installation. See the motherboard drivers page for a listing of links to motherboard drivers and chipset drivers. If this is an OEM (original equipment manufacturer) computer such as a Dell or HP (Hewlett-Packard), we suggest getting the chipset drivers directly from the computer manufacturer website.
