Title case is any text, such as in a title or heading, where the first letter of major words are capitalized.

Tip

Title case should not be confused with proper case, which is the capitalization of every first letter of every word.

How to use title case

Depending on the style guide you are following can change the rules to apply to title case. Below are the APA rules for implementing title case.

  1. Always capitalize the first word of the title or heading.
  2. Capitalize all nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns, including the second part of hyphenated major words.
  3. Capitalize all words of four letters or more.
  4. Always lowercase words of three or fewer letters.
