In computer graphics, a voxel (similar to a pixel) is the smallest distinguishable cube in a three-dimensional image. For example, those familiar with the game Minecraft can think of each of the "blocks" used to create the terrain as a voxel. The picture shows a three-dimensional image of a lion created using different color voxels.

A voxel's location is usually determined by its position relative to another voxel rather than specific, three-dimensional (x,y,z) coordinates like polygons. This method of positioning makes them better for creating objects that are not filled with repeating spaces.
