Wait state

A pause in the processor's clock cycles that allows the processor to halt while it waits for data from other components, such as memory. Wait states occur frequently when the computer's processor has a higher clock speed than other components in the computer. One common wait state is unnoticeable; however, several can affect the overall performance of a computer.
