1. Weekly Computer Term.

MBR ( http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/m/mbr.htm ) -
Short for Master Boot Record, MBR is a small portion of a computer hard disk drive used to determine which partition a computer will boot from. The MBR tells the computer where to find and how to load the operating system. It also tells the computer how the hard drive is organized and provides information about the drive's partitions.
The master boot record is located on the first sector of the hard drive; it's the first program the computer runs after performing a memory check and looking for a bootable disk (if set in CMOS). The MBR is also susceptible to boot sector viruses that can corrupt or delete the MBR, which can leave the hard drive unusable and prevent the computer from booting up. A well known MBR virus is the Monkey Virus.

* Virus: No new virus news this week.
* Security:
marketwire.com -- VigilantMinds Inc., a leader in information security solutions, has validated the latest claims regarding a new Microsoft Remote Procedure Call (RPC) vulnerability. The rumor of the existence of this latest RPC vulnerability emerged earlier this week on several security-related discussion forums. VigilantMinds has created an intrusion signature to detect attempts at exploitation of this new vulnerability. VigilantMinds has already deployed a detection signature to protect its customers and has provided this intrusion signature to the global security community.
infoworld.com -- Two Spanish security experts are inviting computer buffs to participate in a competition to deface a Web site on a production server.
computerworld.com -- Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer announced a number of new security initiatives today that he said would shore up the security of customers' systems against what he called in a statement a "wave of criminal attacks."
* Privacy:
infoworld.com -- Internet service provider (ISP) EarthLink, Inc. said Wednesday that it was offering customers free software to protect them from so-called "spyware" programs.
news.bbc.co.uk -- People are being warned of a new threat from organized crime gangs, many of them from Romania, who are targeting cash machines and stealing millions of pounds each year.
