Trojan masquerades as Skype update
zdnetasia.com -- Cyber criminals are spreading a malicious Trojan horse under the guise of an update to Skype, e-mail security firm MessageLabs said Monday.


* Security:

More trouble with Microsoft patches
news.com.com -- Microsoft's latest batch of security fixes keeps causing trouble for some users.

A "critical" patch for a problem in a Windows component for streaming media, called DirectShow, apparently isn't as straightforward as Microsoft thought. Some Windows 2000 users have applied the incorrect patch, leaving their computers vulnerable even though they think they've patched up, Microsoft said Thursday.

Netscape update fixes Firefox bugs
news.com.com -- Netscape on Wednesday released a new version of Netscape 8 to bring the Web browser up to date on security patches with the underlying Firefox software.

Networks at risk from Snort bug
news.zdnet.com -- A vulnerability in Snort, the popular open-source intrusion protection software, could open networks to cyberattack.

Schools get tailored cyberattack data
news.com.com -- U.S. colleges and universities now have their own version of DShield, a popular service that analyzes security data to help fend off cyberattacks.

Oracle patches 88 holes in quarterly security update
computerworld.com -- Oracle Corp. yesterday released a bundle of critical security patches for its software, fixing 88 vulnerabilities in products including its database and application servers and in some PeopleSoft and J.D. Edwards applications. A work-around exists for just one of the vulnerabilties, according to Oracle, which recommends applying the patches as soon as possible.


* Privacy: No new privacy news this week.
