1. Weekly Computer Term.

GWAM ( http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/g/gwam.htm ) -
Also known as GWPM, which is short for for "Gross Words Per Minute", GWAM is short for Gross Words A Minute and is similar to WPM except it does not account for any errors. GWAM is the over all typing speed regardless of how many errors you make. GWAM is often used as a measurement for users who are just learning to type and is later replaced by WPM.
GWAM can be easily calculated by typing text from an alternate source for 3 to 5 minutes and taking the amount of words you typed and divide it by the amount of minutes you typed for. For example, if you typed 400 words in 5 minutes divided 400 into 5 to get your 80GWAM.

Top News Story: Sony Raids Hacker Playbook
New research from Mark Russinovich over at Sysinternals (the company I've blogged about before as the source a ton of excellent and free software utilities) indicates that Sony BMG has configured some of its music CDs to install antipiracy software that uses techniques typically employed by hackers and virus writers to hide the program from users and to prevent them from ever uninstalling it.

New Worm Targets Linux Web Service Holes
eweek.com -- Over the last few days, a new worm, Linux.Plupii, which attacks Linux systems via Web-server related services, has made its appearance.
* Security:
RealNetworks issues critical patch
news.com.com -- RealNetworks issued a critical patch Thursday to address three flaws that could allow a hacker to launch a remote attack to run malicious code on a user's computer.
Image-handling flaws put Windows PCs at risk
news.zdnet.com -- Three security flaws in the way Windows handles certain graphics files could create an opening for spyware and Trojan horse attacks, Microsoft has warned.
Macromedia Flash Player Patch
blogs.washingtonpost.com -- Macromedia, maker of the Macromedia Flash online video/audio player, has issued an update that fixes a rather serious security flaw in its software that could allow hackers to take over your PC through your Web browser.
Apple sounds alarm over QuickTime flaws
zdnet.com.au -- Apple Computer late on Thursday issued an alert about flaws in its QuickTime media player that could allow a malicious attacker to launch a denial-of-service attack or remote code execution.
Cisco squashes 'critical' Net attack bug
news.com.com -- Cisco Systems has patched a flaw in the software used to run its routers and switches, a new twist in the company's dispute with a security researcher that has roiled the security community.
Sony to patch copy-protected CD
news.com.com -- Sony BMG Music Entertainment and a technology partner are working with antivirus companies on a fix for a potential security problem in some copy-protected CDs.

4. What's new at Computer Hope this week?

* With the new month of November, Computer Hope has posted its new monthly Poll - " What brand of processor does your computer have?" as well as results from last months poll, Quiz - "What is the maximum transfer speed of the wireless 802.11a standard?" and Tip - "Google Tips".
- Added new script that enables users to see what other users are searching for on Computer Hope. This script is now found at: http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/slog.pl
- Posted a revised version of our Computer dictionary. This update only contained minor changes. These changes included formatting changes, removing most of the tables on the page, and other cleanups. We hope these changes will make the page feel cleaner and load faster.
- Completed an updated version of our local update script. With this improved version we will be able to post updates more frequently and easier as well as upload them faster. In addition to improvements on our side users will also have access to more information such as what files are new to our database; marked by "*NEW*", a listing of the last 20 new pages, how many pages were updated for the year, and a few other minor updates.
- Posted updated version of newsfeed script to prevent issue from newsfeeds becoming blank.
-Posted numerous updates to the Computer Hope search engine with release of version 5.0 beta. Below are a listing of some of the major changes.
--Corrected serious issue with search engine not grabbing all related news articles.
--Corrected another serious issue with the search engine index not properly getting all keywords for news related articles.
--Search engine will now post the news articles in date order, listing them from the newest news article to oldest.
--Corrected minor issue with capitalization causing exact matches to not be found.
--Slightly improved the rank algorithm to help bring more appropriate results for some searches.
--Improved some of the AI search responses.
--Update also contains other minor updates.
- Added and updated several computer dictionary definitions.
- Added more computer questions and answers
- Added several new computer companies to third-party company listing.
- Updated newsletter scripts.
- Performed other minor updates throughout site.

The FLY is a pentop computer that enables the user to draw their own special functions and use the pen to interact with the paper like a simple computer. For example, a user could draw a calculator on a piece of paper and then use the pen and the paper calculator to perform math functions.
