DEF CON is a annual underground computer conference held in
Las Vegas, Nevada USA. of networking, computer, hardware and
security experts who discuss computer and networking
security. The conference generally contains computer hackers,
network administrators, government officials and various
other individuals from around the world with computer
and computer security interests.

* Reuters: Afghanistan ruling Taliban movement has banned
the use of the Internet in the war-torn country to stop
access to vulgar, immoral and anti-Islamic material, an
Afghan news service said on Friday.
The Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) quoted
Taliban Foreign Minister Maulvi Wakil Ahmad Muttawakil as
saying the movement was not against the Internet as such but
was opposed to obscenity, vulgarity and
anti-Islamic ``stuff'' on it.

* Virus: No new major virus threats.
* Security:
- Colman Communications Consulting has uncovered issues with
the Encrypting File System feature included in Microsoft
Windows 2000.
When files which were previously in plain text are
encrypted using EFS, either by encrypting the file or the
directory the file is in, or by moving the file into a
directory with EFS applied, a plain-text (as distinct from
cipher-text) copy of the file is made on the disk. In
addition to this plain-text fragments of the original file
may also persist.
- ComputerWorld: Black Hat: A cryptologist who helped discover
several gaping holes in the international wireless LAN
standard and the encryption algorithm meant to protect such
networks yesterday detailed the vulnerabilities that could be
leaving corporate systems open to hackers.
