Short for Tagged Image File Format, TIFF is a common way to store bit-mapped graphic images that can easily be viewed and edited on both IBM compatible and Apple Macintosh computers, unlike windows BMP files.

Top News Story: 1TB drives getting ready to hit the streets

arstechnica.com -- It seems the day of the 1-terabyte consumer hard drive has finally become a reality. Hitachi announced yesterday, just before the start of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, that it will be shipping a 1TB hard drive by the end of the first quarter in 2007. The drive will be the first of three that the company is expecting to release in 2007; the other two are aimed at video pros and the enterprise market. Those two will ship in the second quarter of the year.

Adobe To Issue Patches for Reader Vulnerability
pcworld.com -- Adobe encourages upgrading to Reader 8 and recommends disabling Acrobat and Reader plug-ins on Web browsers until patches are issued.

Users Irked By Windows Defender Beta 2 Expiration
news.yahoo.com -- The beta version of Microsoft's free anti-spyware software expired Sunday, leaving Windows 2000 users out in the cold and some Windows XP owners confused by cryptic error messages.

Microsoft to kick off 2007 with 8 security updates
infoworld.com -- Microsoft plans to release eight sets of security patches next Tuesday, addressing flaws in its Windows, Office, and Visual Studio products.

Researcher says QuickTime hole still a problem
computerworld.com -- The QuickTime vulnerability that led to a widespread worm outbreak on MySpace.com last month could be exploited again, according to security researcher Aviv Raff, who has published software that illustrates his point.

OpenOffice patches 'highly critical' flaw
news.zdnet.com -- OpenOffice.org has patched a critical vulnerability in the open-source application suite. The vulnerability concerns the way OpenOffice handles images in the WMF graphics file format. Exploitation of the vulnerability, which affects all but the newest version of OpenOffice, can enable a hacker to perform a buffer overflow and then introduce malicious code to the victim's PC.

* Privacy:

Google plugs Gmail data leak flaw
news.com.com -- Google has fixed a security hole in several of its services that exposed the address books of Gmail users, the company said Tuesday.

Computer theft may have exposed patient data across five states
computerworld.com -- The theft of a computer from the office of an Ohio-based health care contractor on Nov. 23 has exposed sensitive data belonging to tens of thousands of patients in five health care firms across five states.
