* Virus:
- The worm "SirCam" is wild and has been spreading rapidly through e-mail. See the following page for additional information about the virus:
http://www.computerhope.com/vinfo/sircam.htm

- Almost 12,000 Web servers have been infected by a new Internet worm that takes advantage of a security flaw in Microsoft software to deface sites, security experts said Wednesday. The worm could also help attackers identify infected computers and gain control of them.

Known as the Code Red worm because of evidence that it may have been launched from China, the self-spreading program infects servers using unpatched versions of Microsoft's Internet Information Server software and defaces the Web sites hosted by the servers.

* Security:
- Colman Communications Consulting has uncovered issues with the Encrypting File System feature included in Microsoft Windows 2000.

When files which were previously in plain text are encrypted using EFS, either by encrypting the file or the directory the file is in, or by moving the file into a directory with EFS applied, a plain-text (as distinct from cipher-text) copy of the file is made on the disk. In addition to this plain-text fragments of the original file may also persist.

- ComputerWorld: Black Hat: A cryptologist who helped discover several gaping holes in the international wireless LAN
standard and the encryption algorithm meant to protect such networks yesterday detailed the vulnerabilities that could be
leaving corporate systems open to hackers.

* Privacy: No new Privacy information this week.

This week we would like to talk about those annoying Internet Pop-up ads and some of the ways you can stop them from being displayed when browsing the Internet. One product that we enjoyed was Advertising Killer from Buypin. This product loads into the computer background and helps stop popup ads from loading up and can be customized to accept or deny access to other pop-up ads. Users who are fed up with these Internet Pop-up ads should give this product a try.

Some other locations that will help prevent popup ads are:
Ad Subtract - http://www.adsubtract.com
Pop-up Killer - http://software.xfx.net/mainindex.htm

Some companies that participate in annoying Internet Pop-up ads also allow users to opt-out from recieving their pop-up ads. X10, a company that participates in such advertising allows you to opt-out through their web page located at:
