3. Computer viruses, worms, security, and/or privacy threats
------------------------------------------------------------
* Virus:
Seagate ships virus-laden hard drives
infoworld.com -- If you bought one of Seagate's Maxtor Basics consumer hard drives recently, check it for viruses. Especially if you're a gamer. Seagate is warning that a "small number" of its Maxtor Basics Personal Storage 3200 hard drives recently shipped with the Virus.Win32.AutoRun.ah virus, malicious software that "searches for passwords for online games and sends them to a server located in China," according to a note posted on the Seagate Web site. Only drives purchased since August 2007 are affected, Seagate said.
* Security:
Apple patches 41 bugs in monster day of fixes
computerworld.com -- In one of its biggest update days in memory, Apple Inc. late Wednesday patched 41 vulnerabilities in Mac OS X, rolled out the long-anticipated (and likely last) update for Tiger, quashed 10 bugs in the Windows version of Safari and upgraded a slew of other applications.
Security loophole found in Windows operating system
eurekalert.org -- A group of researchers headed by Dr. Benny Pinkas from the Department of Computer Science at the University of Haifa succeeded in finding a security vulnerability in Microsoft's "Windows 2000" operating system. The significance of the loophole: emails, passwords, credit card numbers, if they were typed into the computer, and actually all correspondence that emanated from a computer using "Windows 2000" is susceptible to tracking. "This is not a theoretical discovery. Anyone who exploits this security loophole can definitely access this information on other computers," remarked Dr. Pinkas.
Apple fixes security bug with iPhone update
infoworld.com -- Apple has pushed out its iPhone 1.1.2 firmware update to users of its popular mobile phone, fixing a widely publicized bug in the iPhone's browser.
Microsoft patches a 'critical' hole
news.yahoo.com -- Microsoft Corp. issued two security fixes in a regular monthly update Tuesday, including one that removes a dangerous bug in all versions of Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
Half a million database servers 'have no firewall'
computerworlduk.com -- There are nearly half a million database servers exposed on the Internet, without firewall protection according to UK-based security researcher David Litchfield.
* Privacy:
Apple's block-all firewall not as advertised
betanews.com -- The Cupertino company has admitted that a setting in its firewall application in Mac OS X Leopard to "block all incoming connections" isn't exactly true. Shortly after Leopard hit the streets, independent researchers took issue with its claims about its new firewall. Researchers at Heise Security said that the application was still allowing certain types of connections to come through.
MySpace malware problems began days before Alicia Keys hack
infoworld.com -- The widely reported problems with pop singer Alicia Keys' MySpace profile have been cropping up on the social networking site for the past 10 days and are likely to continue, a security expert said Friday.
