3. Computer Virus, Security and/or privacy threats
____________________________________________________________
* Virus: No new major virus threats this week.
* Security:
- Computer World: A newly reported vulnerability in Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer allows hackers to steal or corrupt cookie information on a user's desktop through a malformed URL at a Web site or in an HTML e-mail.
The vulnerability means a user's personal information, such as a credit card number or home address, could be stolen by a malicious site, if other sites have stored that data on the user's hard drive. The flaw involved Microsoft's IE browser 5.5 and 6.0.
- C|NET: Consumers protecting their PCs with personal firewalls should not feel too comfortable in their defense methods, according to a security researcher.
PC protection software such as Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm and Symantec's Norton Internet Security fare well against outside attacks, but Trojan horses and worms that infect the machine can easily dodge the firewall's blocks and access the Net, said Robin Keir, chief software engineer for security services company Foundstone
* Privacy: No new Privacy information this week.
