* Virus: No new virus news this week.
* Security:
- ZDNET: Users of Microsoft Office on the Macintosh may find that their product serial number is a tool for hackers.Microsoft
issued a security warning Wednesday saying that programmers with malicious intent could use Mac Office v. X's product
identifier to shut down one or more copies of the application running on a network or connected to the Internet.
- CNET: Internet Security Systems has released a patch to fix a hole in its firewall software that could allow malicious
hackers to take over the computer. The Atlanta-based ISS released the patch late Friday to plug the hole in its BlackICE
Defender and BlackICE Agent firewall software that is designed to block hackers.
* Privacy:
- CNET: Microsoft is putting the final touches on a patch to limit an MSN Messenger feature that allowed any Web site to grab
a visitor's IM nickname and buddy list.
While representatives for the Microsoft Network have said no customers have fallen prey to the potential privacy problem, the
group plans to release early next week an updated version of MSN Messenger that fixes the problem.
- ZDNET: Sun Microsystems has joined a program called Auto-ID to build wireless digital identification tags into everything
from razor blades to soup cans, Chief Executive Scott McNealy said Thursday.
