Top News Story: IBM and Hitachi combine their hard drive operations

* CNN: IBM Corp. and Japanese electronics titan Hitachi Ltd. Tuesday said they have agreed to
collaborate on developing open data-storage systems as they take aim at industry leader EMC
Corp.

Separately, IBM and Hitachi also said they plan to combine their various hard-disk drive
operations into a new, stand-alone joint venture. Hitachi would own 70 percent of the joint
venture and pay IBM for its hard drive assets, subject to the completion of negotiations, the
companies said.

* Virus: No new major virus threats or news this week.

* Security:

- InternetNews: Microsoft has issued a security patch to two versions of its SQL Server
software that were vulnerable to attackers.

Microsoft said the patch was for a buffer overrun vulnerability which affected its SQL Server
7.0 and 2000 database software. In an advisory, the company said the flaw could cause SQL
failure or allow hackers to execute code in the security context in which SQL Server is
running.

- ZDNet: A new tool for manipulating packets of data that travel over the Internet could
allow attackers to camouflage malicious programs just enough to bypass many
intrusion-detection systems and firewalls.

The tool, called Fragroute, performs several techniques to fool the signature-based
recognition systems used by many intrusion-detection systems and firewalls. Many of these
duping techniques were outlined in a research paper published four years ago.
