Asterisk ( http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/a/asterisk.htm ) -
Represented on the keyboard as *, the asterisk is sometimes called a star. The asterisk is used to represent a wild card or wild character. For example when typing *.TXT in a search or find field the computer would look for any file ending with .TXT.

Top News Story: The day Napster Died

Wired: Napster, the software application that ignited the music file-trading frenzy, came to an apparent end on Tuesday after its board of directors nixed a sale that would have kept the company afloat.

Update: MSNBC: In a dramatic reversal, Napster Inc. and German media giant Bertelsmann AG have reached an agreement for Bertelsmann to acquire the assets of the Internets most embattled music service, according to people familiar with the matter.

3. Computer Virus, Security and/or privacy threats

* Virus:

- ZDNet: An e-mail hoax posing as a virus advisory is surfing across the Internet on a wave of PC user naivete.

The fake advisory warns users of the file "jdbgmgr.exe," purportedly a virus that damages a victim's computer system two weeks after first infecting the PC. The hoax has been forwarded by users who believe they have been infected and need to tell other victims to clean out the virus.

* Security:

- COMPUTERWORLD: Problems that researchers claim went unfixed in an Internet Explorer (IE) security patch released Wednesday may expose a potential new vulnerability, a Microsoft Corp. official said today.

- COMPUTERWORLD: The FBI is investigating how someone made off with 13,000 credit reports from a credit reporting agency, Experian Information Solutions Inc., during a 10-month period by posing as a Ford Motor Credit Co. employee.

* Privacy:

- MSNBC: MSN Hotmail users may be surprised to learn that Microsoft Corp. currently has permission to share their e-mail address, birthday, zip code, and occupation with virtually any of its business partners. Hotmail users exploring their e-mail setting have discovered two new options, both now checked yes by default for most: Share My e-mail address and Share My other registration information. Microsoft says Hotmail customers had agreed to share such information when they accepted the companys privacy policy, and the check boxes are actually a privacy enhancement that offers new options to limit the sharing of the data.
