3. Computer Virus, Security and/or privacy threats
____________________________________________________________
* Virus: No new virus news this week.
* Security:
- NewsFactor: Networking giant Cisco has warned of several security holes in its VPN (virtual private network) 3000 series, which is widely deployed by corporations and telecommunications carriers.
- CNet: For more than a decade, the United States government classified encryption technology as a weapon. Now that label might actually apply.
Security-consulting firm Foundstone said Thursday that e-mail messages encrypted with the Pretty Good Privacy program can be used as digital bullets to attack and take control of a victim's computer.
- CNet: Microsoft late Wednesday said that a flaw in its Windows operating system could allow hackers to gain unauthorized access to thousands of computers.
Microsoft issued a security alert, calling the flaw "critical." The flaw affects how more than a dozen Microsoft products, including programs for Windows and the Macintosh, handle digital certificates, which are used to certify the authenticity of a Web site or of software code.
- ZDNet News: Microsoft released further details of a rash of attacks on Windows 2000 servers that has so far stumped the software giant's research team.
In an advisory posted Aug. 30, Microsoft warned customers that several companies had recently observed an "increased level of hacking activity." Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) told system administrators to be on the lookout for Trojan horses--programs that appear to be legitimate but aren't--and for several specific kinds of odd network behavior.
* Privacy:
- CNN: Microsoft on Tuesday rolled out an upgrade to its much-used but oft-criticized Passport online authentication system, in part designed to overcome privacy concerns.
- CNN: Governments worldwide have made it easier for authorities to augment citizen databases and eavesdrop on telephone and online conversations in order to fight terror, according to a new survey of privacy regulations.

http://www.wacom.com/lcdtablets/index_18sx.cfm
This week we talk about the Wacom Cintiq 18SX a great idea for those who find themselves often utilizing drawing tablets with computers. Much like a drawing tablet the Wacom Cintiq allows a user to input data through a pen device, however at the same time displays the output on the device.
In last weeks newsletter we talked about the website netsizer and made mention of the drastic drop it was displaying. We also indicated that we were going to contact the webmasters of this service to see if additional input could be provided about this drastic drop. Unfortunately we did not receive an e-mail back from the webmasters and the site has been down for the last few days. We will keep you updated if we hear anything further.
We also received several e-mails about similar services that can be useful from readers of our newsletter. Calvin, wrote that he enjoys and often uses the site Geektools ( http://www.geektools.com ). Several other users also recommended the following websites:
Network-tools ( http://network-tools.com ) Site that contains various network tools such as DNS records, URL Unecode, URL Encode and various other tools.
Netcraft ( http://www.netcraft.com ) Great site to find out information about a website, such as uptime and server / host information.
The above items as well as other new and innovative services and technologies can be found on our What's Hip section on our News page at:
