Port ( http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/p/port.htm ) -
1. When referring to a computer or device a port resembling a plug-in or connection commonly found on the back of a computer. A port allows a computer access external devices such as a printer to be connected to the computer.
2. When referring to a network or the Internet a port is a location where information is sent through. A commonly used and accessed port is port 80, which is the http port. A listing of commonly known and used ports can be found on the below diagram.

* Virus: No new virus news this week.
* Security:
- ABC News: A complicated flaw in Microsoft Word and Excel could allow an attacker to steal data from documents.
- Computer World: Users of Yahoo Inc.'s paid services were targeted by scam artists trying to gain access to their personal information, including credit card numbers.
In a statement e-mailed to Computerworld today, a spokeswoman for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Internet portal said that an individual or individuals posing as part of Yahoo had sent e-mails to users in an effort to trick them into disclosing their online account information.
* Privacy:
- The inquirer: Microsoft's beta website, BetaPlace, was downed by a bunch of hackers who hacked into the security servers and stole the entire database of Microsoft Technical Beta Tester accounts, we learn.
- Guardian Unlimited Observer: Secret radar technology research that will allow the biggest-ever extension of 'Big Brother'-style surveillance in the UK is being funded by the Government.
The radical new system, which has outraged civil liberties groups, uses mobile phone masts to allow security authorities to watch vehicles and individuals 'in real time' almost anywhere in Britain.
