More commonly known as pound, the term octothorpe is sometimes used to describe the symbol above the number 3 on the United States QWERTY keyboard. The octothorpe is a character that has two horizontal lines crossing two vertical lines ( # ).

Top News Story: Lack of interest kills Macworld Tokyo

* ZDNET: It looks like the show won't go on for Macworld Expo/Tokyo.

The show's producer, IDG World Expo Japan, has decided to cancel next year's show. In an e-mail, parent company IDG blamed the cancellation on a lack of interest from exhibitors.

* Virus:

- ZDNET: antivirus company Panda Software has detected a new strain of the devastating W95/CIH10XX virus--commonly known the Chernobyl virus--which can be so damaging to some computers that it will render some BIOS chips, and even entire motherboards, unusable.

* Security:

- CNET: Microsoft on Friday raised its threat rating for a security flaw in its Internet Explorer browser to "critical," in response to criticism of its initial assessment of the hole's danger.

* Privacy: No new privacy news this week.

This week while looking for a good free solution for a CD to MP3 converter we came across CDex. This is a great software program capable of converting songs from CD's to WAV or MP3, MP3 to WAV, WAV to MP3. In addition the program is open source, has full support for CDDB, jitter correction, and much more. Currently CDex is available for Microsoft Windows 9x/Me/NT/2000/XP.
