our attention that a .tar file is not actually a compressed
file. It is actually a catalogued conglomeration of files

Update - We would like to thank Allan for bringing to
our attention that a .bin file can be a compressed file. The bin file can preserve resource forks in Mac OS files.
For example, a disk image (compressed) file that may have a
Mac resource fork can be preserved by making it a bin file.
