Can I install any operating system on any computer?
    « on: February 24, 2010, 10:06:42 AM »

I have a gateway performance 500 which came with windows 98 (so you see how old it is). I got and installed a windows xp os on it, and the installation went fine. In device manager there are no exclamation marks either. However the problem is that the video and audio output is very jerky and it didnt used to be when there was win 98 on the computer. I heard that maybe I need to update the drivers or something, but I wasnt sure why the same hardware wont work with the drivers it used before. Anyway, gateway does not offer drivers for windows xp on my system (Performance 500). So how can I get updated drivers for my system that work with win xp?

You need to download and install XP compatible drivers for all hardware. Get them from the OEM web sites.

    Along with the advice above...

Pentium III 500 with 128 MG of RAM is going to be choppy...
See if there is a possibility of adding RAM.

768MG of RAM is the sweet spot with XP but 512 will do...

hmmm , okay I guess I will first try to add RAM to the computer, I have 256 I think but maybe your right , maybe it is 128.  I have two slots, do I need to have matching RAM sizes if I want to fil up both slots

If that doesnt work , Ill use EVEREST to find out the specifics of my computer, that is video card manufacturer etc

and you can get the same effect by installing a 1GB stick and then simply installing a stick with -256MB of RAM on it.

There are sticks that take away RAM? Or am I being daft?

Or you can install 768 1MB sticks if your motherboard supports it  :o

Patio, yew are the one that said "768MG"  and did not explain for us laymen what MG means.  Was this a reference to your daily Valium dose?
