    Safe Mode Mystery
    « on: February 26, 2010, 08:49:52 AM »
    XP-SP3. Pentium D945 @ 3.73Ghz. 4Gb Ram.

When this PC is put into Safe Mode it will not reboot from there normally.
If Restart is clicked it will appear to reboot normally and even open the Desktop, but half of the drivers do not load and when trying to do most things '**** will not work in Safe Mode' appears.
There are 3 ways that I have found to get out of Safe Mode:
    1. Last Known Good Configuration.
    2. System Restore.
    3. Reinstall an Erunt backup.
The problem with all of these is that anything done in Safe Mode promptly gets undone.
I have run chkdsk /p and sfc /scannow. I have checked the settings in msconfig. I have run a wide range of scans and found nothing. I have run various commands in the Recovery Console relating to booting and I have checked the boot.ini file without finding anything amiss.
Several months ago I ran an XP Repair, that solved the problem for a few hours and then it was back.
As I have rarely had much call to use Safe Mode this could have been going on for over a year.
There are no indications in the Event Viewer or anywhere else as to what is happening or why.

I had more or less resigned myself to living with this as it does not seem to affect anything else but having recently joined these forums I thought it might be worth seeing if anyone had any ideas.

Download SafeBootKeyRepair by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
    Double-click SafeBootKeyRepair.exeto run it.
Follow any prompts that may appear then post the log it produces.

Thanks Broni, I'll give it a try later and post the results.

        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\safeboot\minimal\Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service

I have just uninstalled Ad-Aware and discovered it was causing several problems http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,100548.0.html so when I saw these two entries I deleted them and ran the program again.

I tried Safe Mode again and had to use an Erunt backup I had just made to get out of it.

        OK. Try this...

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
        msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

        Click on Startup tab.
        Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

        Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
        Click Disable all.

        Click OK.
        Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

        Same problem?

Tried that and still get the same problem. I booted back into normal mode after using misconfig but when I went into Safe Mode it would not boot out of it again.

I do not know if it is connected but after I removed Ad-Aware the other day I twice ran registry searches for 'aawservice' 'ad-aware' and 'lavasoft'. I have just run a third search on all 3 and once again turned up a lot of keys, many of them referring to 'SafeBoot'.
When I had a similar problem with an uninstalled program once before I deleted the contents of the System32\wbem\Repository folder which solved the problem, I have just tried that again.

I will not be back on here until Monday but your help is very much appreciated and if you have any further ideas I would be happy to try them. Thank you.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
          sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy (with Vista, most likely, you won't need it).

All Adaware registry items will be preserved in system restore points and Erunt backups.
If you remove adaware that has no effect on existing system restore points or Erunt backups
If you then create a new restore point and a new Erunt backup, they will be free of adaware.
If you then go into safe mode and then return to normal by using a restore point or an Erunt backup, you can expect adaware to be restored if you used anything but the latest backup

Broni, tried SFC a couple of times. I have the I386 folder installed on the hard drive so I do not need to use the CD.

Alan, I have no system restore points and for several days I have only made new Erunt backups after searching and deleting all the Ad-Aware registry keys that I could find and then only using the latest backup to get out of Safe Mode when I've tried it.

I think that I have finally got rid of the unwanted registry keys. I went through each one and reset the permissions even though they were already set to Full Control. It has also reduced the number of Control Sets from 25 to 7.

Unfortunately I still cannot boot out of Safe Mode normally.

It'll also "freeze" all the current issues he is having as well...

              Think about it.

jaydeee, I just had to look up Deep Freeze to see what it was. The nearest I have to that is Returnil but that does not solve the existing problem with Safe Mode. Also I frequently have programs updating so the system needs to be able to change.
As I said in my first post I have been living with this for a long time it is just that on the rare occasions that I might need Safe Mode to do something I cannot do in normal mode, because I am unable to simply boot out of it whatever changes I make get undone.
