USB Drivers stopped working after update
    « on: March 20, 2010, 10:06:10 AM »
    HI:

    Here are the PC stats:

    Windows 7 Pro
    2GB RAM
    2.8Ghz Intel Pentium D / multi-core
    Board: Dell Inc. 0YC523
    Bus Clock: 800 megahertz

    Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C8
    Intel(R) 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C9

RADEON X600 256MB HyperMemory [Display adapter]
RADEON X600 256MB HyperMemory Secondary [Display adapter]

After installing Windows 7, I used DriveMax Agent to update as many drivers as I could.  The one thing I didn't do was create a system restore point so I could backtrack in case something didn't work.

After one of the USB driver updates, all of my USB ports stopped working.  I can still charge my phone, but I get no connectivity to my phone (ITunes, IPhone won't talk to each other / printer doesn't work / etc).  Since I didn't create a system restore point to go back to an older driver, I thought maybe I could install an older driver, or maybe a universal driver.

I've tried all of the suggestions found online (uninstall all USB Host Controllers, reboot / etc) but nothing works and device manager says they're working correctly.

One strange thing that does happen is if I open DriveMax agent and reinstall the same USB driver that is currently installed, ITunes / IPhone will sync, but if I either close ITunes or reboot, it doesn't work.

Is there a way to go back to an older version for the USB drivers and get things working again?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

    Joe

You should travel to Dell and enter your Service Tag #...
All your drivers will be listed there...
I'd suggest DLoading and installing the MBoard chipset Drivers 1st...

Thanks for the info...how do I install a driver that is older than the current one?  It tells me I have the most current and wont install.

Go to device manager and right click on the usb controller. Choose Properties and in the properties window click on the driver tab. Now choose Roll Back Driver. You will be asked if you are sure. Click yes. The computer should automatically restart. If it doesn't, manually restart it.

Also, you should stay away from driver update programs. Most of them are junk. Never update a driver unless you need to.

        Thanks JJ.

I did try the rollback option previously but my rollback button is grayed out which, according to searches, means there's no previous version to roll back to.  Since I downloaded what I HOPE is a previous version (Dell website, Intel chipset), what folder does it need to be placed in so the driver dialogue box can 'see' it?

And thanks for the info on using driver update software.  I thought it was a good thing!

The driver that you downloaded from dell should be self extracting. You just save it somewhere on your computer and click on it and then choose Run when you  are prompted.

I downloaded a zip version a month ago (R140595), started the setup.exe file, ran through the install, rebooted, and I still had the same problem.  The most recent file I downloaded was an .exe file (same chipset utility though) which I installed, rebooted, and the same thing; no USB functionality (aside from being able to power my iPhone) and the rollback button is grayed out with the newer driver listed.

Have you uninstalled that driver update program yet? That's the first thing I'd do.

Also, this may be a long shot and I doubt it will work but check bios to make sure that your usb ports are enabled.

I did uninstall the driver update program and checked the bios for USB enable...all are enabled.

For whatever reason, I was finally able to load previous drivers (from Vista) for the USB Host Controllers:

Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27CB
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27C8
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27C9
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27CA
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Enhanced Host Controller 27CC

And now, 'Rollback' is active.  But My USB ports still don't work.

Any thoughts as to next steps?
