Internet explorer cannot download ie8-windowsxp-x86-env.exe from download microsoft.com  was unable to open this site

C:/documents and settings\ed favorites  access denied
pops up whenever you change sites online

is there anyway to fix this?

     ???hmmm,
The hard and fast way i find of sorting this issue is to fo into control panel, add and remove programs, uninstall IE8 'thus rolling it back to 7 or 6' and then reinstalling 8 from the microsoft IE8 website.

This is not my preffered method of solving these issues as you don't get to the root cause, but if time is an issue then it generally sorts out the problem.

Let's not uninstall anything just yet. Did the problem just start? If so, what is new since the last time it worked properly (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?

Then by all means, upgrade to IE 8 and let's see what happens. Download the installable version on another system then copy it to yours and install it.

Tried that -- downloaded onto flash drive and then installed it---- during the extracting of files this error message appeared:

iesetup.exe - Entry Point not found
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValuew could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll.

I'm on my way out right now, but see if anything here helps: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/26873

Also, do you have SP3 installed? If not, you should.
