reinstall win xp on dell dem 3000

I tried to reinstall xp on my dell dem 3000 with disk that came with computer. I tapped f11 & control but did not get a menu to reformat disk I cilcked on install and it put another copy of os on my computer how do I get rid of second copy and how can I reinstall xp ?
