    Application cannot be executed. The file *** is infected.
    « on: July 15, 2010, 02:38:42 PM »
    Having trouble similar to previous http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=95177.0 and need help.  Same issue where process cannot be run.  Was able to reboot to safe-mode and complete a scan w/ Sophos client.  It took (4) hours found (3) issues: Kill It, JavaSnd-A, and .  But, upon restart same issues exist.

    So, I went ahead and downloaded the utilities described in the previous thread: RKill, exeHelper, MBAM, MBAM-rules, HJT, and Super Anti Spyware.  And, per instructions I am waiting to begin the process until I receive machine specific instructions.  FYI, I am running Vista x64 and have Sophos installed.  Waiting for instructions on how to proceed.  Any help is greatly appreciated...

    Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. I am working under the guidance of one of the specialist of this forum so it may take a bit longer to process your logs.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

    64 bit computer severely limits the tools I have to fix your computer. Sorry

    Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
    Save Rkill to your desktop.

    There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

    Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

    You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

    * Rkill.exe
    * Rkill.com
    * Rkill.scr
    * Rkill.pif

    Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

    =================================
    I'm not sure if this will run on 64 bit but give it a try anyway.

    Download Security Check by screen317 from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2

    * Unzip SecurityCheck.zip and a folder named Security Check should appear.
    * Open the Security Check folder and double-click Security Check.bat
    * Follow the on-screen instructions inside of the black box.
    * A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
    * Post the contents of that document in your next reply.

    Note: If a security program requests permission from dig.exe to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

      Thanks for the follow-up SuperDave.  While I was waiting I was able to login under an alternate account and found that the infection was isolated to a specific user profile.  I was planning to just move the data and delete the profile.  But after restarting installing MBAM from the alternate account, I was able to run MBAM from safe-mode in the infected user profile.  Then, I restarted in standard mode with the infected profile.  From there the virus appears to have stopped.  I ran a couple more full scans w/ MBAM, Sophos, and SpyBot.  At this point everything appears to be running well.

      I went ahead and followed up w/ a few steps of my own like clearing the different temp folder as well as any remaining directories related to the infections indicated in the different utility logs: MBAM, Sophos, SpyBot.  As a precaution, I have configured Sophos in an aggressive manner: full on access scanning, auto-deletes and daily scans.  I have also allowed SpyBot S & D to implement all of its immunization procedures for the browsers.  Also, my Windows Firewall is on w/ limited exceptions.

      I would consider this ticket/request closed, unless there is something remaining that you think I should work with you to address the problem.  Thanks again for your help...
