black screen on a laptop

when i turn on my computer (laptop),  i get a black screen and also:  press <f1> to resume. <f2> to setup,  when i press any buttons,  nothing happens

The blackscreen with F1, F2 option usually(which i've had recently with my sis laptop) comes or came from :
1. Previous undetected/error devices upon booting
a. Battery is reinserted which made the CMOS/BIOS reset on booting the system.
b. Faulty or loose cable, network/wireless card, RAM modules on slot/s.
c. Any hardware changes from laptop which the system is not recognized on booting.
(Note: My opinion is just base on my recent work on the laptop and your issue may vary)
Have you had any similar or familiar on these issues?

i think my problem is with the bios.   my laptop isn't reading the cd drive.  which has my recovery disk.  but i can't get into it,  to see what drive it is reading.

Try removing the cd(recovery disc) first when booting even on a blackkscreen mode. There's nothing else you can do in that state. And see what gives... after rebooting. Try tapping F8 or go into BIOS setup(even on blackscreen) while booting to change or set first default settings. You might hit something to be able to boot while doing this. If it persist, we may need some info. about any previous events that led to this.

Not only that, but a bad hd would not keep you from being able to boot to the cd drive.

they did come and look at it.   sorry,  wasn't over the phone.   but thanks for the heads up,   i am going to make sure they know what they are talking about.

Hi: I'm not sure what you mean by "nothing happens". If the screen stays black, but you hear the usual whirring and clicking, you could be having a problem with the screen.  I had this problem once.  There is a little button, like the one in your refrigerator, that cues the light in the screen. Otherwise it is black. On my HP laptop, that button is in the upper right corner, on the border around the keyboard.  Once I had a laptop and this button had lost its oomph.  It just wouldn't come up so the computer thought it was always closed and the screen was black. When they fixed the button everything went back to normal.
