TV LCD resolution display options
« on: October 11, 2010, 11:55:09 AM »
currenty i have 2 pcs up and running its not the one im writing this message on but the other one...

its a HP Pavillion 8770, ive maxed out its memory maxed out its processor and changed the paging file to max and off a separate drive and now believe its running as fast as it can go..
its currently hooked upto my samsung 32" LCD TV, im using it for games and general internet browsing ebay google facebook etc....one of my games however is a slot machine emulation game which required large resolution to play it properly 1288x 1044 is the biggest i think maybe more some dont say what they need...

anyway upon looking to change the setting it only gives me two options (800 by 600) and (1024 by 768) so i know i need more but i am looking for a way of doing this.

ive looked up graphics/video cards on ebay but im not sure if tht will help or just give me the same options atm my monitor port is straight into the motherboard. i just cant seem to find any information on graphics card and if they can give a greater resolution...or if there is a program that i can download to do the same job..

I looked at this site:
http://www.premiumgeeks.com/desktop/hp/hp-pavilion-8770c-specs/

and found that the maximum resolution supported by your comp is 1280x1024 which is not very good. According to this site, your comp has AGP graphics. Go on newegg.com and look for an AGP graphics card.

i think that ones the model after the one i have as it doesnt have the C on the end of the 8770 and only had a 20 gig quantum fireball when it was new but tht drive has since passed away god rest its soul...

so a graphics card will not give me the extra pixels size i require?

Yes, it will give you more resolution (pixel size). If your TV supports it.

Because you said the comp is not exactly the same model, you should probably check to be sure you have an AGP slot on your comp. Open up the comp case and google images AGP slot and then see if you can find one on your board.

Is it really worth spending any more money on that 10-year old computer just so it can play a particular game?

I know the TV is new because you said it was an LCD; the computer is old.  No, that's not the right card, it's PCI not AGP.  The white slots are PCI.
Your video is onboard (integrated) AGP & since it's a branded (i.e. HP, Dell, etc.) PC, of that era, may not have an AGP slot, which should be brown.  If it has no AGP slot, it is not upgradeable.

it doesnt have a brown slot no...but the card on the link wouldnt fit in to a brown slot its a same shape as a white PCi slot... this is where im confused.. why would they make a graphics card for the pci slot if it wouldnt work. or is tht for special computers?

PCI graphics cards do work. They're just not as fast as AGP.

I have a lot of old comps that are maxed out in every way possible. It is fun.

Not true. If it has no brown or green slot (AGP), then get this PCI card:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814133245

It's not the best, but it will play Half-Life 2 on medium settings on my comp.

im not sure tht would work as it has to notches

It doesn't matter. You can insert this into a PCI with one notch.

All the cards you are looking at are probably going to be worse than what you already have.

EDIT: Look for at least an Nvidia 8400
